Ain’t We Got Fun! Calgary in the Roaring Twenties

The War to End All Wars was over. We did it. We won! So let’s party.

The Roaring Twenties transformed North America. Women had won the right to vote. A generation that had suffered in the trenches was ready to celebrate.

Today, we often see the 1920s through an American lens and its portrayal in film and television. There, it was an age of gangsters, speakeasies, fast jazz, scandalous movie idols, relaxed morals, shady stock deals, and a party that seemed like it might never end.

But what was happening here?

What were the Roaring Twenties like in Calgary? How much of the decade’s excess, optimism, and rebellion reached Alberta?

How loud was Calgary’s roar?

Join us on Tuesday, June 30th at 6:30pm to find out.

This talk is being delivered by the Historical Society of Alberta. This 119-year old organization is dedicated to preserving our shared past. They had their budget eliminated by the Alberta Government this year and we are asking that those attending the talk please consider a donation of between $2 and $25 to help support their work ($25 gets you a tax receipt).
