As global tensions rise, Canada’s North is becoming a focal point for questions of sovereignty, security, and control. While threats through the Arctic have long been part of national defence planning, the region itself is now increasingly at the centre of geopolitical competition with powers like China, Russia and the United States taking a more active interest in the region.

This talk explores how Canada has responded to these challenges since the Second World War and how it is positioning itself today to assert sovereignty and protect its interests in a rapidly changing Arctic. 

Dr. Sam Hossack is a historian and researcher specializing in the Canadian Arctic. Her work examines how governance and security have shaped the North from the 1950s to today. She is a Research Fellow with the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network and an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Military, Security, and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.

From the quiet abbeys of medieval Europe to the globally celebrated breweries of Belgium and the Netherlands today, Trappist beer represents one of the longest continuous brewing traditions in human history.

Germany comes to Good Cheer on Saturday, May 23.

Join us for a day of great beer, great food, and fun activities celebrating a country with a legacy of fantastic beers: Germany.

Our special guests Mr. Bretzelking will be preparing currywurst (sausages) and traditional German soft pretzels on-site.

We’ll also be pouring two brand-new feature beers brewed specially for the occasion:

-An Ainpöckischbier, re-created from a 1500s recipe and said to have been Martin Luther’s favourite beer
-A hopfenweisse, a modern hoppy wheat ale

Alongside them, we’ll be featuring rich German bocks, historical smoked beers, and a beer from Weihenstephan, the world’s oldest brewery, founded in 1040.

What if one of Alberta’s most controversial policies helped launch offshore oil in Newfoundland?

The National Energy Program left a lasting scar in Alberta, but it also pushed exploration east, setting the stage for White Rose. An offshore oil drilling project that took 21 years to go from discovery to first oil.

Hear the story from someone who was there.

Walt DeBoni spent 44 years in the petroleum industry and oversaw construction of the offshore production facilities for White Rose. He’ll take you behind the scenes of one of Canada’s most important energy developments, and what it still tells us about pipelines, tidewater access, and Canada’s energy future today.

Since 1907, the Historical Society of Alberta has supported individual researchers, authors and those who wish to know more about our history. They advocate for Alberta’s history and work in partnership with other like-minded organizations and groups.

Join us for a beer/talk pairing with our owner and head brewer as we go on a journey into the stories behind historical beer styles and how they’re made. We’ll discuss three styles: IPA, Porter, and Bock. Each segment of the talk will be paired with two tasters of each style.

Come learn needle felting and make some cool, small items for keychains or a shelf. Most of all, come have fun on a Monday night!
